HOW DO YOU TALK TO GOD ?

One night a little girl woke up from a bad dream.  She was very scared and wanted someone to talk to.  As she went upstairs to see if anyone was still awake, she saw that the light was on in the bathroom and the door was closed.  She thought maybe she could talk to whoever was in there when they came out; so she sat down by the door and waited.

A long time passed, and finally the person came out of the bathroom.  It was her grandfather.  The little girl stood up, coming into her grandfather’s view.  “Oh my Taylor, you scared me, sweetheart.  Did you want to use the bathroom?” The little girl thought about what to say and finally said, “Grandpa, why were you in the bathroom so long?”

“Well Taylor, I was talking to God.”

The little girl just looked at her grandfather, confused, and said, “How do you talk to God?”  Her grandfather said, “Well, I talk to God every Sunday at church, and so do you.  But sometimes when something is wrong, or I’ve had a bad dream, I like to talk to Him.”

“I want to talk to God, grandpa.  Can you teach me how?”

The little girl sat and listened to her grandfather, trying to understand his words, but she just couldn’t.

“Grandpa, I don’t understand.”

He looked at her and simply said, “Whenever you need to talk to someone, just say whatever you want to God.  You might not see Him, and He might not answer you, but He will always listen.”

About five years later, when the girl was ten, her grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.  She went to visit him a lot, but he couldn’t even remember her name.

Every night after she visited her grandfather the girl would go home and talk to God.  She would ask him why he couldn’t remember her, and why he looked so sad all the time.  She cried all the time she was doing this, and every Sunday when she went to church.  It hurt her not to see her grandfather on the altar anymore.

The next year her grandfather’s lung cancer came back, and he was put in the hospital.  One day her dad came into her room and told her that after church tomorrow they were going to go see her grandfather.  He said that it was very important that someone was there to hold his hand, because he had done the same to so many people, and now someone needed to be there to return the favor.

The next day her family got in the car and started to drive to the hospital where he was, it was almost two hours away.  About halfway there the girl’s mother’s cell phone rang.

It was her grandmother.  Her grandmother started to tell her something, when the woman told her husband to pull over the car and turn around.  Her grandmother said that about 15 minutes after the nurses put him down for his afternoon nap, they came back to check on him, and he wasn’t breathing.

As the girl’s family turned around and headed home she wondered why no one had been there to hold his hand.  She was mad at God for doing this to him after her grandfather had served Him so well.

At her grandfather’s funeral her dad spoke, and everyone listened with tissues in their hands.  At the end of her dad’s speech he said lines from a song.

“There’s one more angel in heaven, there’s one more star in the sky, Dad, the things that you stood for like peace hope and truth will never die.”

After this her dad sat down and silent tears fell down the girl’s face.

Another year passed and the girl turned twelve.  Two months later she got her confirmation, or renewed her baptismal vows.  She was still angry with God for what happened to her grandfather.  When it was her turn to get confirmed, she went up to the altar and sat on the chair.  The priest blessed her and read her vows to God.  While the priest was reading her vows she heard another voice speaking.  She looked around but no one else was talking in the church.  She closed her eyes and listened to the voice.

“It’s okay Taylor.  God was there to hold my hand, and now He’s here to hold yours.”

The girl cried silently as she heard those words, because she knew that it was her grandfather.

As the years passed, the girl continued to go to church.  Every time she went up to the altar to get communion she’d say a silent ‘hey’ to her grandfather.

On her thirteenth birthday her grandmother gave her a present that she said was already wrapped with the girls name on it.  As the girl opened the present, she pulled out a black book that had a gold cross on the front.  The pages of the book had gold edges, and when the girl looked closely at the book she saw that it belonged to her grandfather.  At the bottom of the front cover the book said Reverend William Seaward.

The girl loved the book and read a different prayer from it every night.  She started bringing the book to church as well.

One day one of the priests at her church noticed it.  He asked the girl if she knew William Seaward.  She said yes, that it was her grandfather.  The priest then said that he had taught her grandfather before he had become a priest.
